Team Ratings & Stats

Every team, every season we hold: our live ratings plus schedule-adjusted margin, efficiency and Pythagorean wins. Sort, filter, plot and download.

Reading the table

Live ratings are our current power ratings: how many points (goals, runs) a team is better than an average opponent on a neutral field. Earlier seasons are rebuilt from final scores, so every season shows the same core columns: points for and against per game, average margin, a schedule-adjusted Margin Rating, strength of schedule and Pythagorean wins.

Green cells are better than the league and brick-red cells are worse, scaled by how far a team sits from the average in that column. The numbers are always printed, so the colours are a guide, not the data. For defensive columns lower is better and the colours flip accordingly.

Margin Rating solves every game of the season at once: each result is the home team's rating minus the visitor's plus a home edge, and the ratings that best fit all the margins are reported (the average team is 0). It rewards beating good teams and discounts blowouts of bad ones. Pythagorean wins estimate the wins a team's points for and against usually produce; the gap to actual wins is mostly close-game variance.

Football efficiency columns use expected points added (EPA) per play from play-by-play data. NFL play-by-play is from nflverse (CC-BY 4.0). College basketball efficiency is points per 100 possessions, adjusted for opponent and home court.

Use Display to switch to a scatter plot, sort by any column and hide column groups, Filter to find a team or keep rows inside a range, and CSV to download exactly what is on screen.
