Efficiency Tiers

Offense against defense for every team, with tier lines for combined strength.

How the tiers work

Each logo is one team. Moving right means a better offense; moving up means a better defense (the defensive axis is flipped so that allowing less sits higher). The dashed cross marks the league average on both, which splits the chart into four quadrants.

The diagonal lines join points of equal combined strength, measured in standard deviations from average on each axis. A team on the same diagonal as another is about as good overall, whether it gets there with offense or defense. Teams beyond the outer diagonals are a full two deviations above or below the middle of the league.

Football uses EPA per play (garbage time removed for college). The NBA uses points per 100 possessions; college basketball uses opponent- and home-adjusted efficiency. Hockey, baseball, the WNBA and the CFL use scoring per game. Switch to the table under Display for the exact values.
