NHL Goalies

Goals saved above expected, save percentage, high-danger saves and workload for every NHL goalie, with ranks and percentiles.

Reading the leaderboard

Pick a season and a window. Rank (#) is goals saved above expected (GSAx) among goalies who meet the window's minimum games, shown as "Min. X games" (a quarter of the season's team games for Season; 10 for Last 20, 5 for Last 10, 3 for Last 5). Choose All goalies to see everyone who played; goalies below the minimum are listed but not ranked. Click a goalie for his profile, season-by-season history and game log.

GSAx compares the goals a goalie allowed with the G&W expected goals on the shots he faced. Across the league it adds up to zero, so a positive number is better than an average goalie on the same shots and a negative number is worse. GSAx / 60 puts goalies with different workloads on the same footing.

Windows. Season is every regular-season game so far. Last 20 / 10 / 5 are each team's (or goalie's) most recent games. Home and Away keep only those games. Back-to-back keeps games played the day after the team's previous game; Rested keeps games with at least one day off. Custom dates covers any date range you choose. Every number is recomputed from the games themselves, never averaged from per-game rates, and a window never uses a game played after its last date.

Free and members. Season and Last 20 are free for everyone. Last 10, Last 5, the splits and custom dates are part of Analytics, and every higher plan includes them.

Save % (SV%)
Saves divided by shots on goal faced. Higher is better.

Expected

GSAx (GSAx)
G&W expected goals faced minus goals allowed. Positive = saved more than an average goalie would on the same shots. Higher is better.
GSAx / 60 (GSAx/60)
GSAx per 60 minutes played, so goalies with different workloads compare fairly. Higher is better.
SV% above expected (dSV%)
GSAx divided by unblocked shot attempts faced: how much better (or worse) than expected each shot was stopped. Higher is better.
GSAx 5-on-5 (GSAx 5v5)
GSAx on 5-on-5 shots only. Higher is better.
HD save % (HDSV%)
Share of G&W high-danger unblocked chances that did not score. Higher is better.
GSAx high-danger (HD GSAx)
GSAx on G&W high-danger chances only. Higher is better.
